Cabbages and Things

Oh dear! has it really been a year? Well I suppose no news is good news. For one thing I think the rabbits have got fed up of trying to break into our penned plot, plus covering the tops with mesh/wire has saved most things from the birds.

So all in all so far it has been a good year.

Our blackcurrant harvest has been a bumper one, so far (thanks to our newly erected fruit cage )w have 11lb of useable fruit, thankfully harvested on three separate occasions, which mean't I was able to leisurely try out two different jam recipes, blackurrant ice cream and a compote.

We have also been enjoying:

Early tatties- every which way.

Dwarf french beans - Thai curry with the squash

Rhubarb- yummy crumble and tart.

Courgette- tempura chips!!!!!

Strawberries- no cream or sugar for me.

Broadbeans- hmm a nice mint dip is destined for these babies.

Peas- they just about make it to the freezer, what? they just so yummy raw.

I feel hungry now!

Hi all, I know its been a long time, over a year, gosh time does fly when your hard worked on plot gets eaten, flooded and pecked at, so much so you throw in the towel. Yes its true we, along with the other seasoned (12y+) plot holders and the newbies called it a year in August 07 believe me it was BAD!!

Well, it's another year and this time we are out to WIN the battle! No we are not going to dress up in khakis arm ourselves with bazookas and ambush Peter Rabbit, although it is tempting, no we have made.........................cages,

We've spent a small (£2.99 for a 5mtr roll Wilko) fortune on chicken wire and all the other plot holders initially thought we were barking mad! (they're actually not far from the truth there) but, touch wood the cages are having the desired effect and the bunnies are not bothering our veg, and now the rest of the allotmentiers are following our lead, ha ha! who's mad now eh!

So unless a Ware bunny appears on the scene I think we have the bunny problem under control , sadly the flooding is something we cannot prevent, keep your fingers half crossed please.

No pics today just an update. We have been trying to take extreme security measures to prevent our crops from being eated by a variety of rogues. First we have Mr and Mrs Flopsy and family, they sure like our brassicas however they are now going to have to have IQs higher than Steven Hawkins to get to our cabbages. Then we have Mr and Mrs Slime (the slugs) It'll be a beer or salt bath for them tonight and last but not least the brothers Quack!! (we are near a brook) they only seem to like our radishes so the netting is up! Oh and we also have an unknown culprit who seems to have taken a fancy to our gerkins?

As for planting we now have sown/planted blueberries (in pots), spinach, fennel, dwarf beans (a yellow variety), sweetcorn, butternut squash and leeks.

Raspberry canes, some have been moved in preparation for a cage to be erected around them, next year we should have quite a hoard.

Hmmm! Lovely strawberries the boys are looking forward to these.

The onions and garlic are doing well. We have planted a mix of red and white onion sets.

Red cabbage and calabrese protected from Mr bunnykins and family.

Only one of our rhubarbs didn't survive the winter.

Well thats all for now, Our next priority is building a cage for the fruits, and planting a herb garden.

Well I have finally got around to starting our family allotment blog. I am hoping to post details of our attempts at growing, cooking and preserving. So bye for now, speak to you all soon.
